Lee Phipps, 31, was repeatedly knifed in a daylight attack.
He and his mum Barbara Yusuf-Porter had suffered years of racist abuse from gangs who screamed "nigger", "black bastard" and "Paki" outside their home and painted swastikas on the property.
They spent around £5,000 turning the house into a fortress, with CCTV cameras filming youths goose-stepping and giving Nazi salutes day and night.
In an exclusive interview with the Mirror in August 2003 Lee said he had stood up to the yobs two months earlier and tried to photograph them but was thrown over a wall and punched.
He said: "They are always shouting 'nigger' when they go past or making some remarks about me and my mother and it gets to you at times.
"We have 600 video tapes, which is 2,400 hours or 100 days of film taken over the years and compiled a diary which describes each incident.
"There are skinheads walking past doing the Nazi salute and goose-stepping like German soldiers. There is also film of them coming in the back and throwing missiles, vandalising the property."
But detectives said their film was not good enough to get a conviction.
Barbara, 53, whose white mother married a black Somalian, said at the time: "It is horrific for us. We are targeted because Lee is white and I am dark. It is pure ignorance."
She said she did not feel officers stationed locally took the threats and abuse seriously enough and at one stage considered legal action against the police. Last August she set up internet group South Tyneside Against Racism and appeared in a TV documentary about their ordeal.
Lee was found dead on a doorstep near his home in South Shields, South Tyneside, on Thursday. Police believe he was attacked nearby and staggered to the nearest house to try to raise the alarm.
Det Supt Steve Wade said: "Mr Phipps and his mother have complained of suffering racist abuse. Because of issues raised by them in the past we have to treat this as a possible racist murder."
But police said last night the response to an appeal for witnesses had been "disappointing".
They are keen to speak to a man in his early 20s, with dark hair and wearing a sky blue top, seen running from the direction of the murder scene. Northumbria Assistant Chief Constable Kevin Mathieson said they were doing everything possible to find the killer.
He said: "Officers have met community leaders to assure them a very full and thorough investigation is under way."
