Historic Trail of Tears may be expanded into N.C., elsewhere
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Support is building in Congress to add more historic sites to the infamous "Trail of Tears." More than 160 years ago, some four-thousand Cherokee Indians died on a forced march along the cross-country trail from North Carolina and other eastern states to Oklahoma.
The original Trail of Tears Historic Trail was designated by Congress in 1987. It now includes more than 2200 miles of land and water routes through parts of nine states.
The new trails will be added in parts of North Carolina, Oklahoma and Georgia. Its sponsor, Tennessee Congressman Zach Wamp , says he expects the bill to clear the Senate and be on the president's desk by September. |

I'm very happy congress is thinking of expanding the Cherokee sites. I wish they would add sites for all the other Eastern tribes too. The Cherokee are to be commended for educating the public about what happened to them. I do wish the Creeks, Seminoles, Choctaw, Chickasaw and others were as effective.
