| Quote: | So I was shopping the other day for household goods and I ran across something that broke my heart. It was a cartoon video for children and the title was Thugaboo. http://www.thugaboo.com/
Now, there is no television allowed in my house, so I may be a little out of touch. I can’t help it. There isn’t anything worthwhile on tv. I just can’t expose my toddler to the sex, violence and discrimination…and I’m talking about the kids’ programs! For my son, it’s nature and culture videos from National Geographic and other choice material that’s more appropriate for a young, tender mind.
So, there I was, face to face with an example of what my son’s peers are watching. Thugaboo. Featuring Black cartoon children who go through the trials and tribulations of learning not to steal and other important morals. As a Black woman and, once a Black child, I felt horrified, humiliated and betrayed.
So, I just wanted to take this opportunity to give a shout out to my friends at Wayans Brothers who produce the Thugaboo series. Doing their part in a world gone mad to reverse the work of their ancestors and denigrate the Black individual. Not satisfied with the work that they’ve done so far to mis-represent Black adults, they’ve decided to promote our negative stereotypes to children; our future. Thanks for everything. |
