Not actual sign waving protests. Maybe some expressions of outrage. An angry editorial or two.

Remember, the woman she's playing wasn't a black American. Black Americans won't recognize her as part of the tribe the way they would a multiracial American public figure.

Use a white actress to play Sally Hemmings (entirely appropriate casting, BTW) - then you'd get protests.

So many mixed race women who could play the part who don't get the chance because they may not be famous enough.

Angelina Jolie is mixed as well.

Yeah, I know she is mixed. I meant so many women of black/other ancestry that could naturally play the part.

I agree. There are very few decent, serious roles for women of color--mixed or not. What's become of Cynda Williams (mulatta) or Angela Bassett? Let's not even get started with Asian-American actresses (or the emasculation of Asian-American men). Jolie didn't need the role. He's successful and rich. This was a chance for a mixed-race woman to have a major role.

What's next? Will Joie play Lena Horne or Bessie Coleman? Why hire a mixed-race or woman of color when all you need is a successful white actress, make up, and a wig? Many mixed-race actors and actresses have spoken about how they are told that they are too white, too black, or vice versa for roles.

Economics and
