This is a CNN video about minority kids accused by their peers of acting white. Interestingly the reporter, Carol Costello, declares that these kids face dual or double discrimination -- from whites as well as from their underachieving comrades. Where in the clip do any of these kids reference white racism? Can you introduce the notion of black or latino racism only as long as you inject their white opposite number as some sort of politically-correct balance?

Many times, these types of kids will have an easier time reacting to "Whites" than they will to their fellow "minorities"
I can speak about this from my own personal experiences over time. I can say that these days, "White" "conservatives" for the most part, take me for who I am over anyone else, particularly, the "Black identified" and "White liberals". It is real insulting, IMO when someone comes up to you and automatically thinks you may support something because of how they perceive you. I love the looks on their faces when I tellthem they must be crazy when I don't agree.
I suppose if I were young, I might be more pressured to act a certain way, even though I didn't fall into that pressure growing up to an extent, but today is different. I know what a lot of "Blacks" think of me and quite frankly, I don't give a damn.

I've been accused of acting white and worshipping Jews and Asians.
I've have also been accused of hating African Americans but liking foreign blacks too much...yeah all by African Americans. Oh yeah I have also been accused of denying the blackness of the original Israelites and favoring the "fake white Jew". I have also been accused of self hatred because apparently I find black women attractive, but not enough overweight really dark ones, so I'm adhering to "European Beauty Standards". As if really dark fat women are attractive in most of the world.
Sometimes I think people just like to make up new versions of self-hatred for fun.
The previous URL is no longer valid, but I found it again on uncutvideo.aol.com, so the link is now working. It’s particularly sad when you hear the “black” girls admit that they purposely got bad grades in school just so they would fit in, just so their “peers” would not accuse them of acting white!
The thing is, if you equate achieving academic excellence with “whiteness,” then what the hell are you equating with “blackness”? The answer is wretched ignorance!

I've even met people who think "logic" is white. No, I'm not joking. I was arging with some mentally ill type Afrocentric moron on Blackprof.com and he said that I have been brainwashed by the white man's "knowledge" when I exposed this guys beliefs as irrational he went on and on about why I was "self hating", "brain washed", "afraid of blackness", etc.
Then he told me that because logic, as we know it, was an inferior rip off of "black" Egyptian knowledge by the Greeks that it was inferior and white propoganda. He called it inferior empirical arguments by "people of the word" that had no baring on the reality of humanity...or something like that.
I was godsmacked...I actually sat back from the computer screen and was like..."I actually think this guy believes what he is saying..." That was truely scary. The other thing was that many folks were agreeing with him.
This same guy went on to talk about how black people should help black gangs and drug dealers roll over their "blood money" into legitimate industries and mentor them as a way to help the black community.

WOULD YOU FIND THEM ATTRACTIVE IF THEY WERE ATHLETIC AND DARK? OR IF THEY WERE LIGHT SKINNED AND FAT?

I don't find fat women attractive at all.
I don't care about skin color much. I've felt attractive to women who are ghostly redhead white to very Nubian dark...
I think my preference though is actually strange. I trend to like extremes. I really like pale women (like my wife's color or lighter) which is like a stereotypical Italian or lighter and brown skin women...like Aisha Tyler, Liya Kebede.
I don't like...what I call baby poop color. Like Halle Berry and most Mestizo Latinas...a lot of Indians, etc.
That's just me...the women are not ugly just not my first choose. Don't know why...
I do like petite women, so any woman who is obese is not going to do it for me. I got in this argument on Blackprof, I said that jennifer Hudson.
Some guy said she was big, and I said yeah "pretty fat" but she has lost weight, and she is not ugly...just overweight.
Black women on that site went nuts, and acted like being overweight was the natural shape of a black woman.
Whatever, there are plenty of black African women in the DC area and very few of them under 40 are overweight. If you see a great big black woman under 40, I'm at least 75% sure she is African American. That is not genetic, it is called having a poor lifestyle.
I also find I don't like most blonds. I like dark brown, black, or (for whatever reason) red hair. I also like light colored eyes with very dark hair, but eye color doesn't matter much.
Anyway because I don't like women who are 5'2" and weigh 160lbs who wear clothes way to tight for their body and have long fake extensions or afros I am self hating. That is what I learned on Blackprof. Those are the only type of black women you can like and not be self hating.

Everybody needs love, and I can imagine it really hurts to be told
one is "acting white", when all one is trying to do is excel in one's
everyday schoolwork and other activities. A feeling of acceptance
by our peer group goes a long way. Yet feeling sexually unattractive
is also a painful burden to bear, especially for a young lady. So I'd
like to share a few of my thoughts on that subject as well, especially
after having read what our dear friend, Mr. Dragon Horse has written
about female appearance.
Maybe as an ebony colored African-American male, he is a little bit
more free to say such things; but speaking as an olive colored
Multiracial male, I want to make it clear that even though I greatly
respect Mr. Dragon Horse and his many outstanding accomplishments
and even though I enthusiastically love having him and his charming
intellect here among us, I don't want to leave the impression that we
Multiracial males are the ones saying the things he's saying about
certain human colors and sizes.

Now, I may be as wrong as two left shoes, but from what I've come to
believe over the years, I've got a feeling that my following seven points
are as true as true can be. Anyway, for better or worse, here they are:
1. There are only two types of women in the entire world; those who
are beautiful and those who are extra beautiful.
2. All races, colors, creeds, sizes, and age groups can and do produce
stunningly beautiful women.
3. There's nothing wrong with a little baby phat on a woman.
4. Creator doesn't make any mistakes. That baby phat just gives men more
to love. Check it out:http://www.gofish.com/player.gfp?gfid=30-1082929
5. Beauty fades as the years wear on, but a good heart lasts forever.
6. Women shouldn't have to forever worry about wearing themselves out
trying to live up to unreal standards, in any area of life, nor should men.
And we must try to allow folks to enjoy who they are. Life is too short.
7. When I was much younger, I too, would have probably disagreed a bit
with some of the things I've just said. But as the years roll on, we begin
to more easily see Creator's beauty everywhere we look. And it's wondrous.
But all that comes with age, and there's plenty of time for that. It'll come.
*big smile*
But yes, back to this "acting white" thing. We're hearing it too much these days.
It's got to be making life unbearably difficult for those striving to excel, often against
almost insurmountable odds. I agree, something has to be done for them, fast.
These youngsters have an important role to play in our nation's future.

I do not buy this "acting white.'"
What does that mean is the question I would ask anyone if I would be called upon as 'acting white." White people do not have a natural born right and talent for dumbness, smarts, a command of the English language or lack of or anything else.
Fat, thin, straight hair, nappy hair, perms, weaves, tall, short, highly educated, no education, etc. can be a trait, habit, style, etc. of anyone from Whites and Blacks.
I had this problem myself back in Junior High and High School. It was because I spoke "proper" English, and did not sound uneducated. Except the term for it was "Oreo" ,you know, black on the outside and white on the inside.
I was actually told by one of my black friends, "Come on talk black." Eventually when I entered High School I adopted ghetto talk and slang to fit in. But I was still considered "different" because of my race, complexion and I was a valley girl, I wasn't bused from dowtown L.A.
Funny thing when I was growing up in Guyana. The kids who were best at maths were the black and mixed kids while the Indians and Chinese were better at chemistry. The whites and Portuguese were worst in both. [Let us please do not start an argument about why I separate whites from Portuguese as this is the normal practise in Guyana and even Portuguese want their own identity not to be swallowed into white which usually means WASP].
A mixed cousin of mine said once that had she hung out with the black girls in school and not the Portuguese ones she might have done better in school.
Moral of the story. Its not a "black thing" to do badly in school or shun math and sciences. Its an internalization of self hate that is a too often occurrence in white dominated societies where blacks are stigmatized as losers.

Amen. I do wonder why people, who could split the psychological/socioeconomic hairs when considering other race-related phenomena seem to falter when it comes to realizing a few things here. It seems to be me that the following are extremely important factors:
1. IGNORANCE and lack of self-efficacy are likely the main contributors rather than racism, Black or White.
2. It's all about location, location, location and parenting, parenting, parenting. If you have ignorant parents surrounded by more ignorant parents, they reinforce one another and their kids have very little exposure to more enlightened ideas and ways of living. One would literally have to focus on getting out of this environment to have a chance, and how many of these kids have an exit strategy? There are plenty of majority non-White environments (yes, even Black ones) where excellence is acceptable and not punished. I have been in them and have family members who were raised in them.
3. The younger generations in urban areas seem to be most prone to this kind of thinking (at least for Blacks). It has become socially acceptable to be ignorant, and these ignoramuses are usually the cool, popular kids. It is a more insidious and dangerous version of the age old nerd vs. jock/cool kid phenomenon.
Both of my parents and older relatives talk about this change (even my cousin who is 40 has noticed it). Though my Black family was raised in poverty and crime, their environment did not define them. It wasn't socially acceptable to be on welfare. Allowances were made temporarily but it certainly wasn't okay to make a lifestyle out of it. It wasn't okay to "act dumb" and do poorly in school.
"Acting White" was more about putting on airs and rejecting Black culture (or choosing a non-Black love interest), not fulfilling your potential from what I can see.

I think it's about culture...American culture to be exact.
Here in America, there has always been the notion of if you are an educated person, who speaks good American Standard English, dresses very "Eurocentric", all while looking down your nose at poor people (code words for "Black", even though there are plenty of poor "White" folks here too)...then you are "acting White". It's always been that way since Slavery ended from what I read and have been told.
That lie was started by "White" folks a long time ago and has been perpetuated by some "Blacks" ever since, IMO. Only ignorant fools believe this kind of pseudo-science, IMO.

Question: What is dressing Eurocentric in an American context?

Not dressing like you just got released from prison (i.e. baggy pants), lol.
But seriously, not dressing in Hip-Hop gear would be my first guess......

True.
The "Acting White" thesis is no longer a tenable explanation for why blackamericans underachieve in American schools compared to other ethnic groups.
Can some of you please please please please come over the debate board on mulato.org and help me explain to some of those morons that Blacks are totally cut off from mainstream society and expected to live life like some bunch of social pariahs - forever condemned to the outside!

There is no hard evidence that the B/W Test-Score Gap is caused by "an internalization of self hate that is a too often occurrence in white dominated societies where blacks are stigmatized as losers." In fact, it is not clear how one would objectively define, much less measure: "internalization," "self hate," "too often," "white dominated," "blacks," "stigmatized," or "losers." The phrase sounds like catchy but content-free political demagoguery to me. "We do not know the cause, so it must be White people's fault." This not only fails to explain anything, it slams the door against any effort to learn enough facts to attempt explanation.

Source, please. As far as I know, Ogbu's and McWhorter's hypothesis has stood up to scrutiny, especially regarding the children of BWI and African immigrants, and afrodescent or biracial children raised by adoptive White parents. Such children's scores deteriorate only upon being exposed to Black peers in adolescence.
