Hi i`m multi-racial(canadian) and my parents are from that country, i don`t really undertsand why the people there think the way they do ,and if they are the only ones who think that way.Are vinceys the only ones who call lightskinned people'' brown skin people''? do other countrys do the same?.

It makes me angry when i heard my mom refer to someone as a brown skin person when she forgets their name,i`m not use to how they label people over there by their skin colour or hair type i think its racist.I use to be lightskinned but not anymore due to tanning i`m light -med brown now,i told my mom that she shouldn`t only call lightskinned people brown because there are different shades of brown out there and i told her that i`m brown too she says ''NO YOUR BLACK ''then i told her what did she think i was before ''she said brown''.

People of ethnic backgrounds who are brownskinned can be light brown,med-brown,dark brown and there are different shades for each group. It makes me wonder if people in that country think that anyone who is darker than the light group is consider black if they have a black background, but anyone who is lighter is consider brown even though they have a black background.I also heard her refer to someone as carib just because her face is wide, skin is kind of red,and her eyes are small, yes she does have a carib background but she isn`t only carib,i heard my aunt use it on someone too.My great grandad is carib but i don`t even have those features.

Also are vinceys ashame of their background? , the census shows that over 70% of people in S are black which isn`t true ,and mixed is a small percentage. My great auntie(brown skin colour) who is my mom`s father sister is mixed with black because her great grandfather is black and he married her scottish maternal great grandmother, after that their kids and grand kids marry indian people,i always wonder how they define themselves. My mom said her parents are proud people so its why they don`t share things about themselves i wonder if that`s the case with other vinceys?

Now the hair- if someone`s hair is less curly other there they call them coolie.I got that idea in my head by my mom i don`t use it anymore but when i use to see someone from those islands with hair like that i think they are either trini or half indian,i know its dumb they can also have curly hair too.My hair is curly which is a cross between different ethnic hair textures but all my mom sees is ''nappy hair''(i don`t believe in this word for any hair type). My hair is very soft with nice curls and she only looks at it when its dry and she would be negative, when i have a good curly hair day she doesn`t even look at it,it doesn`t matter how i have it she`s texturised(perm hair) she tells me that her hair was rough when she was younger and she would compare it to my own saying'' like your black people curly hair'' as if she`s trying to put it down, but months ago i heard her say before '' you have good hair'' which doesn`t make sence to me.My mom only calls herself black but she would perm her hair as if she`s ashame of ''black hair'' (she said that`s what her hair is) but she thinks that i`m turning my back on black people because i want to say i`m mixed that`s hipocritacal.I see people listening to rap music saying N this and N that, they would perm their hair but get mad if someone doesn`t call themselves black.

The answer is that in much of the angophone Caribbean the term 'brown' is used to mean people of visibly mixed ancestry or known mixed ancestry (the latter if they appear white).

thanks Very Happy my mom uses it for the colour of someones skin, like you said she uses it for people with visible mixed ancestry because she doesn`t know if their mixed.I hate that people would label others by the colour of their skin and they won`t consider someone mixed because of their looks.

Sure. But remember that they don't know who you are. It was just so you could get their perspective. I get into debates with them all the time. Especially the Afrocentric Vincys. But other ones are cool.

I have heard the term brown. It usually refers to to those who are lighter than the average black person and those from mixed backgrounds. I quite like the term brown because my skin is a browny colour.

Thanks for erasing it,i wanted it to be erase over there first before i ask people to erase it here i wrote this out of anger so that`s why there`s alot of info here.I always been communicating with people over msn but from the year of 2006 i started to talk on forums i`m not use to the debating thing. I haven`t been to vogue site in a while because things went crazy over there evryone was saying mean things untill some person had to erase many of the posts. Now when i write stuff i`ll be more aware of debates.

I didn`t know that there are people who don`t mind the term.My mom is in her 40`s so i think its was more popular to use the term in her day.I`m lighter than her so i don`t know why she went all crazy when i said something like ''me a brown person.....''(i didn`t say brown the way she thinks it ,i said it due to my skin colour) i forgot what i said to her but she shouldn`t have lost it and said your ''black your black'' i think it has to do with that i like to say i`m mixed not black she got more mean she made fun of my hair and my skin colour,my nationality(canadian),when i told her the things she said she denies saying some of it,she never complements my hair but she always suggest to comb my curls out i tell her that i can`t comb it dry because what they said on the net she assumes i`m in a hair cult because i take good care of my hair. She can see that my skin is brown just like many people who are brown,i don`t know its probley ignorance they way she thinks, she use it for those people who look as if one of their parent is white and the other one is black. There`s this lady who she call brown and i just saw her again a week ago,i said to my mom look she`s the same complexion like me so how come you consider her brown? i hope what i wrote wasn`t to confussing.
