I never hear much about Lousiana's spanish heritage/culture so I thought this was interesting.

I'm wondering if Isleņos are considered "creoles", or are they set apart from the standard variety "creoles" that have predominantly french culture and ancestry??

With "creole" defined as people with french and/or spanish colonial roots, they would fit the definition, but they seem to be isolated from everyone else.

During Spanish Louisiana? They were criollos. I don't think they ever used the term creole.

I stand corrected.

Quote:
Hispanics and Latinos

New Orleans has long had close connections to Latin America and the Caribbean. Many immigrants and exiles arrived from Cuba and Honduras beginning in the nineteenth century. In recent years, Mexican immigration has increased. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, a large number of naturalized and undocumented Latino immigrants have become workers in the construction and service industries. The descendants of earlier Spanish-speaking arrivals, such as the Isleņos and other Spanish creoles, may identify as white European Americans rather than as Hispanics or Latinos.

That would depend on the phenotype!
Criollos were usually unmixed French or Spaniards born in the Americas. Over time, the word was anglicized to creole, which was usually the offspring of French or Spaniards with African or Indian women, usually illegitimate.

Creole is French. It was a Frankified Criolo (Portuguese)
