From an American racist point of view I am perceived as an Afro-American (the negative legacy of white supremacy and the One Drop Law), but from a genetic point of view, with my light complexion, green eyes and curly brown hair, I am obviously one honey from many flowers: on the branches of my family tree are people from various parts of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Pre-Columbian North America.
I view racism in any form, whether oppressive or reactive, as an
expression of the mass mentality and, ultimately, of bad character. On the other hand, it is a heroic expression of intelligence and good character for an individual who finds himself in a racist social environment to think for himself and to identify, both himself and others, primarily in terms of our fundamental humanity and the content of our character and not in terms of race. |
