I've alway thought is perspective of American culture and thought was very deep.
Here is one I found to be really interesting
"To be an American Negro male, is also to be a kind of walking phallic symbol. Which means that one pays, in ones own personality, for the sexual insecurity of others"
~ James Baldwin

Not to drift too much, but since there have been quite some large threads about Anatole Broyard/Bliss Broyard elswhere on the forum, I found one cynical quote that some have used in their signature line on another board which I belong. This board happens to be a support group for the childfree people. Anyways the quote is as follows:
| Quote: | | There was a time when we expected nothing of our children but obedience, as opposed to the present, when we expect everything of them but obedience. Anatole Broyard |

Sorry about that Gemini. I got my wires crossed and mis-interpreted. I though that since your first post stated a perspective of American Culture from a well known personality which had been discussed on this board-J(James Baldwin), I had erroneously thought that my reply was also about another aspect of US culture as percieved by yet another subset of society. Thus I had given an example quote by another well known personality which has also been discussed in numerous threads on this board. (Anatole Broyard)
If this thread is specifically concerning James Baldwin (...or..er..the male anatomy), then I apologize |
