My mtDNA was U5 with mutations 16224C and 16270T. I have tried to find more information about it but the only one I found was an article about the african ancestry in Puerto Rico. It said that the origin of the Puerto Rican U5 was probably North African and that it came from the Guanches (the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands). The Guanches were supposedly of Berber origin. Also, I did find a match in Sicily. Does anyone know anything else about Puerto Rican U5?

U5 is older than the Berbers. From what I recall it is about 50-60,000 years old and originated in either the mid east or north africa. It has a north south distribution from above the arctic circle in europe to tropical west africa. If you only had a HVR-1 test, you probably won't be able to figure out much. With a HVR-2 test you will have a better chance of finding matches that would point you in some geographic direction. You probably already know this, but IMO the most likely source areas for U5 in Puerto Rico would be continental spain, the canary islands, and west africa.
