I read the book 1984 when I was in high school and to be honest, at 16, I did not fully appreciate the book, but that has changed as I got older.

There is a scene in the book and the movie called the '2 Minute Hate'...basically propoganda.

It sets up a situation where the government tells the people that they are the good, hard working, civilized folks in the world and there enemy in Eurasia is the evil, barbaric, bloodlusting, psychopaths.

Palin-McCain rallies remind me of this.

Real good, decent, hard working Americans are Republicans who are also patriotic. They are "Joe the Plumber" and anyone who does not agree with them is an elitist, who is secretly anti-American, socialist/communist, worships Europe, terrorist sympathizer/appeaser/lazy/educated at top schools, lives in Washington D.C., New York, Northeast in general, etc.

The the crowds spontaneously yell out "traitor, terrorist, muslim, communist, socialist..." as Palin eggs them on.

Scary indeed.
