http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/goingson/2008/11/behind-the-scen.html

We were having a larger conversation about his belief system and his politics. He told me he didn’t have a horse in the November election and that he didn’t believe in getting involved with these kind of earthly contests. I had asked him if the fact that Obama was black didn’t compel him to get involved.

He said, “Why?”

And I said, Well, because you’re black.

And he said “Am I?” and held up his wrist next to my ruddy one. Indeed his skin was lighter, and he cracked up.

He doesn't label himself sexually, why would anyone be surprised that he doesn't subscribe to the race labeling game either??

Surprised

Really??? The last I heard of a wife 'n kids was a few years ago, when his ex-wife Mayte got pregnant and supposedly had a miscarriage. He had just released a cover of "Betcha By Golly Wow" (on Emancipation, I think).

If that was all a scam, good for him for keeping the media out of his personal life.

MaryLee just googled Prince and says that her knowledge of the composer was about 20 years out of date. Apparently he has been married more than once.

Ok the official Prince fan has arrived.

Yes, Prince is straight, He was married to his ex dancer Mayte, she was pretty young.

http://princetext.tripod.com/n_1997.html
It lists the child's cause of death Oct. 23 to be complications of Pfieffer's syndrome Type 2, a rare skull deformity.

He married one of his Paisley Park studio works Manuela Testolini (who is now seriously dating Halle Berry's ex Eric Benet) a few years ago, she was also young.

Prince is black identified, yet of mixed ancestry which was mentioned in the April 28, 1983 Rolling Stone article by Debbie Miller entitled, "18-23+".

Prince's father is part Italian (50% or 1/4), and his mother is mixed with African American, French and Native American ancestry. Prince comes from a family that has a lot of racially mixed ancestry, but they consider themselves black.

Prince's Mother Hattie Shaw was 16yrs younger than his father John Nelson. She was very fair with blue eyes.

Hmmm. According to Debbie Miller, writing in 1983, the composer self-identifies as Black. According to the man himself, speaking in 2008, he does not. Lacking any other evidence, I would go what what he says now, not with a magazine writer's opinion from 26 years ago.

I notice that Miller claimed that Prince's parents considered themselves "black." She took this to mean that Prince was inevitably "black." This is a position we hear all the time from mostly black-identified folks who love the "one drop" myth but know that claiming that white-identified mothers and other relatives (who, like Obama's white mother and grandparents may be the child's main or only caretakers) don't count doesn't wash anymore. Well, David Horowitz was raised by Communist parents. He later became a Republican. "Racial identification" should be treated the same way.

When Prince's parents were in public, most people no doubt saw an "interracial" couple, regardless of whether they officially claimed to be of the same "race." Prince's slightly autobiographical protagonist in the movie "Purple Rain" has an Italian mother and black American father.

Right, but there are also 'mulatto' identified people who one drop in that way as well, discounting the white/native/asian grand/great-grandparents of (Marabous & Griffes) especially since a lot of these people have some degree of relation with their no-black side. Black identified 1Droppers & 1st Gen Mulattoes 1droppers.

Prince clearly understands that racial categories don't mean a thing. People can say that I'm black, but my skin colour is brown. However, racial categories prevail. I've always told people this and they just sit there and agree with the system, so I leave them. It mostly has to do with the recognition and the benefits you get from people thinking your black . Also, it increases the associations you have with your 'own' people. I totally agree with Prince on this one. He isn't black , but by the system he is black.

When he is in context, next to his family...he looks like any "light skin" black dude...if I saw him at my family reunion and he said "Oh I'm a cousin from..." I had never met, I would not question it.
