Sure, although it depends on the eyeball. She is a Florida Hispanic. Probably Cuban, Puerto Rican, or Dominican. I would guess that she has around 30-40 percent sub-Saharan genetic admixure. In her culture that makes her White. |

| Like Frank said, I guess it depends on who's making the call. But as a white person myself, I would say that woman is definately not white. |

Note that the "race" is listed as "White/Hispanic" as opposed to "White." This is common in law enforcement's "wanted/missing" posters. I would say that "white" is meant to show respect for the racial sensitivities of Latinos and Latin American nations, while "Hispanic" is a way of saying that the person is not "white" by the usual American standards. |

Do you think that this woman looks white? The Ku Klux Klan didn't think so when the newlyweds' picture appeared in the papers. She was the first Mrs. Johnny Cash (mother of his four daughters) and is of Italian ancestry. Nevertheless, she grew up classified as "white" in the Jim Crow South. |

My definition of white: a label that some people call themselves and or others.
So, her being labeled as such by others certainly fits my definition.

It should be pointed out that Hispanics regardless of appearance are often described as white by government law enforcement agencies in some parts of the country. This may not be uncommon in places like Florida. I've seen this more than a few times when I lived down there.
Where I live currently and where I grew up, such a woman would not be described as white racially but Latino or Hispanic. |

I realize that people have the right to indentify as pretty much whatever they want and I don't have a problem with that. But from the looks of this picture it seems that for her to ID as "white" would be a bit of a stretch to say the least. LOL
Appearently her paternal side of the family was directly from Italy. Do you have any info on her mother's side? |

The picture may make her look less-than-white, but I've seen film of her where she looks about as white as some Italian, Greek Americans, or Armenians I've encountered. The picture may be influencing perceptions.
I'll admit, though, that prior to knowing anything about her background I assumed she was Chicana or maybe even Puerto Rican.
Her Mother's side is from Texas.

I emailed this woman, who says that she never suspected her father and grandmother of being anything but darker whites ("Spanish"). She now claims that she doesn't think that Anatole Broyard looked white (That's an old story; they always "see" nonwhiteness AFTER being told of the person's mixed ancestry.) Broyard looked downright "Aryan" compared to her father and grandmother:

Eyeballing people doesn't mean much. The range of phenotypes in Southern Europe includes phenotypes that people jump on and say recent subsaharan ancestry.
Compare these two completely Southern European descended people:
Spanish actress Yohana Cobo (on left):
American Actor Nick Turturro:
To American artist Slug, of the Group Atmosphere (25% African American, 75% Northern European)
Again, I just point this out because I knew a guy who parents were immigrants from southern Italy, who growing up in a small town in the US got called racial slurs usually reserved for African Americans and was asked on many occasions if he was biracial. Of course, there are sub-saharan genetic markers throughout Europe.
My point is that sometimes when people say that their ancestors were from Southern Europe, perhaps they are correct. |

True. That kind of physical ambiguity in Southern Europeans also provided protection and white status for many Americans of recent admixture who otherwise who were not as physically "white" as Slug and others. Belle Da Costa Greene is an example. |

I've seen Wanted photos of Metizo Hispanics classified as just plain White before (not even White/Hispanic). I've always wanted to know what the point of this government classification when very few non-Hispanics (which are the majority) would describe that person as White to the police (I've had to call 911 before and the operator asked me was the victim "Hispanic" 'Black" or White". White and Hispanic was treated separtely and the Asian race question was totally ignored, as if Asians don't get involved in crime).
I think it goes back to the general perception that the Spanish and other Southern Europeans are mostly dark skinned with jet black hair. Many Latinos 'work' under this perception of being darker skinned Southern Europeans. Strange as it is, I've seen many general photos of Spaniards in Spain and I was shocked at the number of blonds they had!!!! I like a lot of people grew up thinking Southern Europeans all looked like this: (lol)

From what I understand federal crime statistics count Hispanics as white when they are perpetrators of crime and Hispanic when they are victims of crime. I don't know why it's done. |
