Hi,
I am of 50% unknown US origin 50% English and have had various autosomal tests done, with results as follows:
AbDNA 89% IE (65% North Europe, 12% MED 22% South Asian) 11% East Asian
DNATribes say my profile is the same as someone of 1/4 to 1/8 South Asian ancestry.
DeCodeMe say my US paternal origins are Eastern Europe/Russian.
Although it is great to have such a powerful test suggest a location of origin for my father, where would the South and East Asian come into it? It's not on my Mum's side, she is of English stock that's well documented?
I'm hoping someone here who knows about US history and genetics may be able to shed some light as clearly 2 tests have picked up the same Asian signature! Thanks! |

For two centuries (1600-1800) there was a lot of traffic between India and the rest of the British Empire. Many famous Florida families of the colonial period descend, in part, from British subjects who originally came from India.
When the Spanish took over Florida from Britain in 1783 they conducted a census of the colony. St. Augustine alone had a half-dozen families from India, and there were several more indentured individuals from India working on outlying planations.
I just happen to have studied Florida because that is where I live, but I doubt that Florida was in any unique. I predict that diligent study of census and other records from the colonial period would turn up many East-Indian-descended people throughout British North America.
India, after all, was the "jewel" of the British Empire for a very long time. |

| Bryan Sikes found Asian (unspecified) and African markers in Brits. I read a study showing that the Hemoglobin D disorder found in English and Irish people was brought to the British Isles from India. |

Have you attempted to trace your father's ancestry via written documentation (vital records, census lists, immigration records, etc.)? |
