Captain “Hell Roaring” Mike Healy

My defense of the Healy family's white identity (originally in "Interracial Voice" and now in the Backintyme book "Passing" for Who You Really Are) is extensively quoted in the book.
Since the authors specialize in military histories, I dared to hope that they would be reasonable about Capt. Healy's "racial" identity. Nope. They believe that "white" Americans were united behind the "one drop rule" from the antebellum period until recently. They think that the "one drop rule" was invented to create more slaves. They think that Capt. Healy and his family (at least the ones with "black blood") were really "African Americans" and only "passing as white" despite their strong identification with their Irish-Catholic heritage.
