Dear Brothers and Sisters of all Races and Ages,
Did you know that two thirds of all women reported with AIDS in the United States are African-American and two thirds of all children born with AIDS in the US are African-American yet African Americans represent only an estimated 12% of the total U.S. population? Many of these innocent women and children have been infected by the men they love; Men on the “Down Low.”
Living heterosexual lives while hiding their homosexuality on the “Down Low” is devastating the African-American community. While this is not exclusive to African-American’s, many of us know that this has been a dirty little secret within the community for a long time. The recent best seller by J. L. King and the coming out of our beloved Terry McMillan’s husband have started to get people talking. It’s my mission to KEEP people talking because it is only through talking about the pain and devastation that life on the “D.L.” has cast upon our community that we will we be able to lead our brothers from a life of deceit to one of truth.
I am a heterosexual, actor, director, writer and producer. So why am I making a movie about a secret society of African-American homosexuals? Because I am also a son, an uncle, a Godfather, a neighbor and a black man who deeply loves his community and his sisters and brothers. Life on the “Down Low” is not a homosexual issue or a black issue; it’s an issue of life and death. These men date and marry people of all races and that makes it all of our issue. The median incubation period from HIV infection until the development of AIDS is 10 years. Ten Years! That’s a long time to carry around a disease before knowing you have it. That’s a long time to be potentially infecting people you love and are intimate with. That’s a long time! I’m not condemning a man’s sexual choice, I’m only condemning deceit. These men are not murderers in their hearts, but this situation is in fact making them murderers. Murderers of their own wives and children.
