I'm not sure what to make of this cartoon or what it means exactly. Having said that, Arab (Muslim and Christian) attitudes about people of African background and descent are-as uncomfortable as it is for many to hear-can be negative.
In school I knew an older woman from Mali. She was moderately Muslim and a feminist (she was an anti-FGM activist for example). We got into a conversation one day that somehow led into how much she couldn’t stand Arabs, with qualification. She liked Moroccans. She was well-traveled throughout North Africa and based her opinions on the racism she said she experienced in places like Algeria and Tunisia. She was also peeved about their past in the slave trade. |
