[This thread was split off from Should Latin Americans adopt an endogamous color line? in the "Latin America" forum. -- FWS]

You know we can get down and personal if you want.

No, we can't. This is my website. If you get personal you get suspended. ... By stating personal experiences as if you speak for hundreds of thousands of other people, you skirt close to the edge of this rule. Too close for my taste.

OK why dont you go into ANY West Indian neighborhood in the summer time. Go to any party. Go to any concert. Listen to cars driving by. Tell you what. Go by the 5 stop at Gunhill Road in the summer time when people/taxis are waiting in the early evening.

Better yet hang out by Eastern Parkway in late summer. And I am not talking about during the carnival.

Personally arguing this point is silly and any one who knows Caribbean people will know exactly what I am talking about. Please note that were it not for the police who regularly close down some of the summer outdoor parties and seize the mammoth speakers you would hear even more loud and bass heavy music. Pity you didnt hang out with me in the 1980s especially at those fantastic Trini parties in Brooklyn.

Because I am not making a claim. I do not need to find evidence to support my claim because I am not making any claim. The person who makes a factual claim is expected to back it up. The person who reads a factual claim and expresses skepticism about it need do nothing. Have you read The Rules yet? If not, this is probably an excellent opportunity.

Paragraph 2.a reads: If you think that someone is in error, ask him to cite his sources. If he just re-states his opinion, you may conclude that he is uninformed. But you should first give him the chance to say where he got his information.

Paragraph 2.b reads: When presenting something potentially controversial, it is good form to cite your sources before being asked. If you fail to cite sources before being asked, you may be seen as careless. If you fail to cite sources after being asked, your posting privilege may be suspended. (See also item C.4, below.)

It is not really that complicated. John makes a claim, John must back it up. If Harry expresses skepticism about John's claim, he is not obligated to "disprove" it. If you think it through, this is the only way that intellectual discourse can possibly work. Otherwise, John could claim that Martians have landed somewhere and anyone who expresses doubt would be saddled with the job of proving that no Martians have landed anywhere--an impossible task. Surely you can see that.

In any event, whether you see it or not, you must live with it because those are the rules of this website,

Let us wait until summer and resume this discussion. We can both collect empirical evidence then.

No. I have neither the desire nor the obligation to collect empirical evidence about the musical preferences of British West Indian immigrants to the United States. I have made no claim about this topic. Try Tyrone. He is interested in that sort of thing.

Given that I have spent all my life within a Caribbean culture I am sure I know as much about it as he does.
