| Ok heres one. i've been told that it does'nt matter how mixed you are if you're black and something else and you inherit the hair of your black parent that makes you black. period. now i don't agree with this because i know people of mixed races that are asian and black white and black, even mixed people who are 1/5 or one eighth black woh have course hair. but the fact is they are mixed. what do you guys think about this? |

I think it's a bad idea to say who is or isn't mixed based on hair texture, although I would say that growing up with a black mom, hair is an important thing. |

Though I don't think it's the only visual indication of "mixed-ness," it's definitely as much of one as skin color. Of course, it's still possible for a person without either to be mixed. |

I have several bi-racial cousins who come from European white and African black parents who have kinky hair. It's as kinky as mine, and kinkier than some of my other relatives who are MGM - like my sisters.
It's a bad stereotype that says what hair grade determines how one should identify. People don't want to accept that mixed race people, from FGM to MGM, indeed have kinky hair. Subsequently, mixed race people can also have dark skin and broad noses. And this is not a rarity.
The line of thinking that mixed race people who have the features mention above should only consider themselves as Black is what produced a nation of people who call themselves Black and full-blooded black, despite being descended of several generations of racial mixing.
This is an old analogy, but it's like taking several sets of ingredients to make several different cake batters, say carrot, banana nut, chocolate, coffee, strawberry and vanilla. Then taking all of those and pouring them into the same big bowl. Because the chocolate batter has the most influence in the color of the batter, you refer to the cake mix as chocolate when it's really not. |
