Born in Medellin, Colombia to a nurse and businessman, Magali believed she was destined to follow in her parent’s footsteps, and so pursued her degree in Business at the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia.
Ironically, it was during her studies that she was asked to enter the Miss Colombia Beauty Pageant. The director of the pageant was so taken by her that he suggested she attend a casting call in Bogota, changing Magali’s career forever.
Magali immediately landed the role of Engracia in “La Potra Zaina.” It marked the first time a black woman played the lead protagonist in a soap opera. The tremendous exposure led her to become a local news anchor in Medellin. After a year, Magali went to Bogota and secured a role in the multi-award-winning soap opera “Señora Isabel,” a series that garnered kudos for its acting and directing, and was the first to show blacks as upscale individuals involved in interracial affairs.
The notoriety of “Señora Isabel” led Magali to her first film role in “Nostromos,” directed by Allister Reid and starring Claudia Cardinale. This was followed by yet another soap “Sueños de Espejos,” and a telefilm directed by Gabriel Garcia Marques titled “Amores Ilicitos.” She was paired again with the famous director in “Edipo Alcalde,” an adaptation of Oedipus Rex.
“Señora Bonita” was next on Magali’s list of soaps followed by the mafia film “Hilos Invisibles,” which she starred in simultaneously with the soap “Elegida.” It was during this period that Magali got her break at Telemundo. When the director of “Hilos Invisibles” saw the pilot for “Angeles,” he proposed a more complete representation of Latin America by recommending a black woman to be cast in one of the staring roles.
In her new role as one of the famous “Angeles,” Magali now spends her time between Los Angeles and Tijuana.

As strange as it may seem to many of us here in the U.S. because most Colombians are clearly non-European and a large minority looks like Ms. Caicedo, the casting of Ms. Caicedo in that television program was a landmark event to some people. You almost never see people who look like her in a role like that on Spanish-language television.
The funny thing is, as racist as the U.S. is, many Latinos who are black, have visible African ancestry, or who are very Amerindian in appearance have more opportunities to get roles in English-language television and films than they would in Spanish-language films and television. Actors like Zoe Saldana, Rosario Dawson, Gina Torres and the late Merlin Santana, would have even more difficulties finding roles in Latin American films and televison or in U.S.-based Spanish-language productions than they normally have finding roles in English-language productions.

However, she clearly does not look "average" Colombian either. A large majority of Colombians won't feel identified with her. The number of people in Colombia that look like her is around 6%.
Colombia perhaps is not "nordish" like the U.S. but is "average" Latin in apparience.
However, she should not be discriminated because of that reason.
