Interesting read, I had a Guyanese friend in high school and his family wasn't really "Indian." The only Indian thing about them were their surnames tbh. He was still a cool guy, but he sorta felt outta place whenever I took him to our gharbas, diwali celebrations, or parties.

I use feel out of place when I went to Indian celebrations because everybody spoke their own language. I have come to admire my own cultural hybrid space and facing the reality of my Caribbean/West Indian origins.

Ok, for all of you who got everything twisted, let me set everything straight. I am a proud Indian from India, and I've been reading everything in this thread, and I think there is a lot of miscommunication going on.
First and foremost, I am a Tamilian (or as you guys call it "MADRASI") hailing from Madurai district in Tamil Nadu. I am proud of my people, my language, and my heritage.
You diaspora Indians feel as if the Indians from India look down on you because of you coming from Trinidad or Guyana, but what you don't understand is, WE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITHIN INDIA!
Northern Indians look down on south Indians because we are dark, not all of them, but that attitude runs in India. South India is different from North India, our lifestyle, culture, etc.
My personal experience with Caribbean Indians, the Indians from Trinidad I found very friendly, a lot I met from Guyana had a little attitude, except for the Guyanese "madrasis". This is my personal experience so far, i'm not generalizing.....

^Yeah I don't think ppl who aren't knowledgable about India realize the cultural diversity found within it. We are still all Indians though, atleast imo. Cheers.
