Here's a clip from the documentary "The Confederate Flag Still Flies in the South", which is about the Confederate descendants in the state of Sao Paulo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVJrv5V-uMY
Some of these people are in fact people with significant and/or acknowledged African ancestry.
The whole 48 minute documentary can be seen here:

You have to register, but I'm not sure if there is a cost. |

Yes. We (Mary Lee and me and the kids) used to live in Campinas, SP, which is just down the road from Cidade Americana. As I mentioned in http://onedroprule.org/viewtopic.php?p=4956#4956, | fwsweet wrote: | | As I recall, the emigrants/refugees were from the Gulf Coast (Alabama, Louisiana), so they might have been less color-line strict than people of the time from the upper South (Virginia, North Carolina). They obviously intermarried after arriving in Sao Paulo. Recall that it was not until late in the century that Jim Crow brought today's obsessive color line to the lower south. Of course, modern-day Neo-Confederates (UDC, SCV) everywhere would probably freak out. |

Well. it has been about 35 years now, but as I recall we lived in Cambui. The IBM plant where I worked was in Taquaral, and we belonged to the SHC (Sociedade Hipica Campineira) which was a bit out of town. |

We lived only in Sao Paulo (Campinas and then Higienopolis in Sao Paulo) and then in Rio (Niteroi and then Copacabana). But in my work I also travelled to Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte and the surrounding towns). That was about it. We always took our vacations to the 'States or to PR, to visit the relatives. Gostaria conversar com voce em Portugues, mas meu computador nao tem nim tilde nim acentos. (Ou pelo menos, nao sei como opera-los.) |

Frank, if you want accents, go to control panel, select regional and language options select Languages, Details, add key board layout US-International.
then every time you hit an accent it will allow you to either hit a space to do the accent or hit a letter to do the accented letter.
Examples:
' áéíóúç
`àèìòù
"äëïöü
~ãõñ
^âêîôû
I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones I use. |

| I'll be damned! It may be a cliché, but there are more things here than are dreamt of in my philosophy. Incrível! (Port). Coño! (Sp.). Sumbitch! (Eng.) |

I fear not. I seem to recall that they had some books for sale in the gift shop in Cidade Americana, but I did not buy any, although now I wish I had. I had no interest at the time. |

| When I was attending the Univ. of Pittsburgh they had a few in Portuguese, but none in English. A good English language book about these people would be great IMO. |
