Of course we know that the word "Hispanic" is not a race, but a term to classify Spanish-speaking peoples of Central, South America, and parts of the Caribbean. Yet when you hear the word Hispanic...most people picture dark, straight-haired, medium brown-skin- which is an inaccurate picture because anyone of any "race" can be classified as "Hispanic". Within the Hispanic community, there seems to be this stigma about having black ancestry. I don't know how many times my cousins have said "I'm not Black, I'm Puerto Rican". Yes they are Puerto Rican, but they also failed to mention that "Puerto Rican" is a nationality, not a "race"
I think we should post pictures of self-identified "Hispanics" whom only claim their Spanish ancestry, yet fail to mention their African and indigenous blood. |

Oh, I'm sorry. I missed this sentence earlier. I thought this was a "for fun" thread, not an "outing" thread. I was just posting pics of people who are "hispanic" but appear to have African ancestry. I was in no way implying that the four people I posted deny their African and/or indigenous ancestry. In fact, I really cannot think of any famous "hispanics" who openly deny their mixed ancestry. So, on that note, I will not be posting any other pics in this thread.  |

I started another thread for posting pics of Latinos/Hispanics with apparent African ancestry, in general. That way, we can reserve this thread for its original purpose - "post pictures of self-identified "Hispanics" whom only claim their Spanish ancestry, yet fail to mention their African and indigenous blood".

Many Puerto Ricans do consider Puerto Rican to be a race. Puerto Ricans are taught in school in Puerto Rico that their ethnicity is a mixture of 3 races that have mixted together to form the present day people described as Puerto Ricans. As born out by genetic anthropology, this is an accurate description. Celebrating the creation of a new race from former races is a common theme throughout the americas. Columbus day in Mexico is known as dia de la Raza. By saying they are Puerto Rican, not black, what your cousins are likely doing is asserting their non-membership in the US black/African American ethnic group. By saying they are Puerto Rican, they are acknowleging that their ancestry involves 3 races. They are acknowleging they are a separate ethinc group with a homeland, a language a culture and a history separate from the culture of the United States. The only thing they are likely denying is your atttempt to put them in an ethinic group they don't belong in for any reason other than their skin color. |
