I suppose, ULTIMATELY, it's ALWAYS in the eye of the beholder, which explains Tribalism...

I look at this picture and all I can think is DAGGERS. Rolling Eyes I wonder if Spike Lee realizes that his red-headed daughter is going to have a life experience more similar to mulatto girls/women than to black girls/women.

That girl will most definitely identify as black and not mulatto? Since she IS Spike Lee's daughter? Not everyone who's mixed will call themselves mixed.

Hi, Helena. I wasn't referring to how she will identify. I was referring to how she will be perceived and treated. I'm sure plenty of "light skinned blacks" will tell you how often they've been asked what they were mixed with or assumed to not be "really black". Shucks, I have a brown-skinned cousin with curly hair who gets that. I was just saying that his daughter, with her light hair/eyes/skin could probably benefit from frank family conversations about heritage, since the outside world will most likely question her about it.

In a "Parade" magazine article, the blue-eyed, blonde- haired actress admits she is part African and Native American.

Do you have a link to the Parade article, or could you at least tell its publication date? I am giving a lecture tonight on White Americans with mixed ancestry and I would like to include Locklear as well as Channing and Broyard's son.

What about Carly Simon?

I tried searching at Parade.com and didn't find it. The orginal article appeared ~ 2000 or so.

I can go with Carly Simon. I was hoping for more on Locklear because Locklear is just so extremely, well, White.

Wikipedia does not mention anything about Heather being part Black. It only mentions Scottish and Lumbee ancestry.

I remember that article in Parade from some years ago, but seem to recall a mentioning of Lumbee only, not African.

1. Wikipedia is badly corrupted by idealogues. Cite Wikipedia as a source in a paper written for my class and I will take off more points than if you had cited no source at all. For a source by a reputable historian (employed by PBS), see the link that Melanie provided.

2. What do you mean by "Black"? The Lumbees of my personal acquaintance deny having any African-American ancestry. But all admit to having sub-Saharan ancestry from African slave ancestors. If you do not know the difference between membership in the African-Amercan ethnic community (which the Lumbees have not) and having sub-Saharan ancestry from African slaves (which the Lumbees have) please read rules 3.3 and 3.3.11, which you just violated.

3. Locklear's father is a Lumbee. The Lumbees (former Croatans) of Robeson County NC have been tested more than once and average about 40-50 percent sub-Saharan DNA markers.

Just wanted to clarify that I'm aware of the above, but was merely saying that I don't recall the Parade article mentioning African specifically, so I don't think it would have served as a good source for Frank, if he was looking for a direct mentioning of this.

That PBS article is very informative.
