Hello Everyone..I am new to this site. I've enjoyed reading all of the post that I've read so far and I welcome with the enthusiasm in learning more about what it truly is to be who I am. I enjoy reading through the experiences of others and the shared experiences we probably all share, in being bi-racial, mixed, malato or whatever term you want to use. Let me share a short background about myself. I am a mom of 2 teenagers, boy and a girl...both by a darker skinned man. I share that because I've seen allot of instances of racial experiences through them more so through my son, who just turned 18.
To me black-men still go through the stigma of racism, that's why I stress to my son the importance of education. The things I've went through with him, in high-school, which to me is a set-up of protocols in keeping a young black man down... but in any event my son didn't fall prey to a set-up-system of bull-crap. This, I will share later down the line in a future post, on my experiences on raising a black son if you will, it has been and still is a learning experience, in America...i will not say the coined phrase-white America, only because I and the rest of us are America, we deserve that right.

In any event, I grew up here in Michigan, my mom was a white woman; of German & Polish descent. My dad, is a black man; of African descent, truthfully, aren't we all...????
Rolling Eyes
Currently, I am a single mom, I work part-time and am a part-time student, obtaining my degree for Computer Security Management. Knock-on wood..i am very close to obtaining my goal!

When I was growing up, my mom left my dad due to abuse, so she became a single mom of four. It was hard for her, but she didn't let it show. We had everything that we needed and never hunger for anything we had love, food, church and a wonderful childhood. During my childhood we suffered racism, our neighbors were white, I remember being called a half-breed by whites...I never understood it. Never-the-less, my mom made sure that was an non-topic. Now looking back, I see the struggle my mom had and to this day I am in awl of her. Sadly I lost my mom to cancer at age 15, she was 38.

After my mom passed my dad entered our lives again when I say our lives I mean, my siblings and I; which consisted of 3 girls and one boy. Lets just say, the end result was my siblings today have a non-closeness with our father. I however, remain close to my dad by not excluding him out of my life. I hope one day my siblings will follow suit. I wonder if this is a factor of mixed race, because I hear of this allot, in being not close to your father. Also, I've realized allot of people of mixed race lose their moms at a young age, I wonder if research has been done on this, to support my experiences on that.

I just wanted to share a-little about my-self, I've touch on a few points and in the future, will share more of my experiences and thoughts with each of you..and I hope to learn more about everyone else.
Thank-you.
Smile

Hi, gingerjenn. I'm glad to hear that your son made it through! I didn't grow up with my black dad around, either, so I didn't see how different things could be for a black man in the United States until I married one. I know a lot of things have changed over time, but we've still got a ways to go. Well, "see" you around. Oh, and my white mom is still here (thank God!). Sorry to hear you lost your mom so young. It sounds like she made a great impact on you, though, during the short time you had with her.
