dark-skinned Black women rarely appear in Essence or Ebony for that matter
Either this author equates Alek Wek's skin color with being darkskinned or he really doesn't read Essence or Ebony magazine. Every issue features darkskinned editors, contributors and models. Kerry Washington is this month's Essence cover girl. Mary J. Blige was on the cover last month. Both of these women look dark to me, and they are not exceptions.
You kidding me?
it's apparent that this site's participants VARY in their concepts...
no amt. of data can remove a person from their frame of reference...it's like asking a Pole and a Spaniard to come to a common linguistic understanding...the only way to do that is to create a pidgin/creole composed of the two.

I guess it depends on perception. I consider Mary J. to be medium-dark skinned AA, more akin to the 'average' AA.
Also in this category (Medium-Dark skinned) is Nia Long, Whitney Houston, Denzel, Tiger Woods.
Dark is Weslyee Snipes, Alek Wek.
Medium is Will and Jada Smith, Queen Latifa, Erika Baddu, The Rock.
Light is Vanessa Williams, Beyonce, Alicia Keyes, Vin Diesel.
Very light - Persia White, Mariah.
Will Smith and Beyonce are in different categories even though they have like the exact same skin color? ok not quite, but the difference between will and Beyonce is not that great imo. But it's all about your perception, i guess.
