Funny, the same chart that I posted in the other thread addresses this question too. Again, it is from Heather E. Collins-Schramm and others, “Markers that Discriminate Between European and African Ancestry Show Limited Variation Within Africa,” Human Genetics 111 (2002): 566-69.
The rightmost cluster shows Afro-Euro admixture of 159 Nigerians. As you can see, the Euro admixture (distance from the bottom) is barely detectable in Nigerians. It is a tiny bit more than that of the 135 subjects from Zaire (Congo) (the third group from the left).
The Nigerians measured were Edo (Bini) residents of Udo, near Benin City. I do not know of any studies of Ibos (or of Hausas, for that matter), but I suspect that Hausas would show more North African (Berber) admixture due to the mixing consequent to the medieval west African empires, and Ibos would show less. But this is just a guess on my part.
William (this forum's moderator) might know more, but he is not usually online on weekends.
Come to think of it, the only people of the region who are said to be mixed with North Africans are the Fulani. As I recall, we have a long and interesting thread on the Fulani in this forum. Just do a search on "Fulani" in "Molecular Anthropology and Genetics". |
