Should I be able to start a thread called "What do we call Powell" and argue why I think she is black???? :o
This thread is a rule violation is it not?
The above quote from Dragon Horse seems an obvious attempt to violate the following rules under the guise of an inquiry:
Quote:
2.5 The “racial” or ethnic self-identity of other members is off-limits.
• 2.5.1 Do not discuss another member’s ethnicity or “race” without their permission.
• 2.5.2 Do not “racially” or ethnically label a member against their wishes.
2.6 Do not criticize anyone’s choice of ethnic or “racial” self-identity. — If you disagree with someone’s choice of ethnic or “racial” self-identity, keep it to yourself. This applies whether they are individuals or groups, and whether they are site members or not.
I propose that posts attempting to place a racial or ethnic label on members against their will be deleted.

I didn't label you as anything or criticize your identity in any way.
My point was, if I made a post with a similar title about someone on this board (I used you as an example) would that be a rule violation.
Frank gave his opinion on the matter and I clarified my own. He then said he would leave this to the moderator.
I never questioned your identity (2.5). Nor did I say you were a member of a group (2.5.2). Nor did I criticize your choice (2.6).
IN fact these very rules are what I was inquiring about.
If you feel offended I used your name, I apologize. I should have said..."what if I made a post that said X person was Y racial group and should we call them that".
The reason for using your name is because you were the one who posted the thread, nothing more. To be honest I have no idea how you identified (before now), nor did I care. If you think I need to use some type of deception to point out what I think your racial identity should be, you don't know me very well. You are not that important to me, sorry, for me to try to formulate a plot against you. That's just corny.
I didn't know how Powell identified, either, so it makes me a little uncomfortable that she felt inclined (compelled?) to reveal her "racial" identity in that thread as a response to another member hypothetically questioning her "racial" identity. In other words, that whole situation just kind of proved the point of why we need rules 2.5 and 2.6. It's nobody's business how members identify and if one chooses to reveal such information, it shouldn't be debated.
To ask members to comment on an article just because they post it seems kind of silly to me. I might see an article that I think other members might find interesting, but I might not HAVE anything to say about it. That doesn't mean I shouldn't post it for others to enjoy, discuss, debate, question, etc.
If Powell wants that post deleted, I'm all for it. It might not be a bad idea to have it stated in the rules that posts about another member's racial identity will be deleted. Otherwise, I'm afraid the member in question might feel obligated to defend, explain, reveal, etc.

As far as asking for a comment on an initial post, many message boards (for years) have asked members not to post articles with no comments because it is seen as Spamming the board or a way to hide behind articles to express one's opinions on a subject matter.
For instance, on board X, a person of race A who keeps posting negative articles about race B with no explanation.
This is basically "flaming" a board on the down low...
Some time it is just clutter...often if people don't post an initial comment it does not spark a conversation in the thread. If you noticed many of Powell's threads have no further comments besides the initial post.
Wonder why?
I did not even hypothetically question her racial identity. I did not define her racially. I did not attribute a race to her. I did not argue for or against her racial identity.
I questioned if one could make a post that questioned her or anyone's racial identity, in the title.
I have my own theories as to Powells reaction and why she spams on this site, but I'm not sure if I can state them as it would be "attributing motive" in some lose way. If Frank says it is okay, then I will.
I just want everyone's cards on the table, not the identity but their underlying reasoning.
Why someone would come to a racial board and want to hide their "identity" when it is not even allowed to be questioned, seems silly to me but whatever...that is individuals choice. If the point of the board is expose American racialism and many people on this board advocate a person being able to choose whatever identity they want, it seems silly that people feel inclined to hide it.
It is like coming to a gay board and feeling the need to hide the fact you are "gay or bisexual". That does not seem rational to me.
No one forced anyone out of the closet here .
If someone says..."would it be within the rules to make a post about Dragon Horse's weight"...
Am I compelled or outed in a way that I need to post my weight on this board? LOL Your reasoning sounds like extreme victim hood, as if someone has no control and was forced to do something; hardly the case. Don't conservatives believe in personal responsibility and the ability to make decisions for oneself?
That's really all I have to say about this since it is about to drop off the deep pit into lunacy. No wonder politicians stay away from nuance...it's definately not a universal concept
DragonHorse, the difference with the weight comment is it is open-ended. "Black" is not. If you posted "is it OK for me to say that the picture of OTHER makes me believe she's a fit and athletic person?" then, yes, I would feel obligated to let you know I am quite the opposite of that description! Otherwise, I'd feel odd about there being a misconception about me hanging out there. You still wouldn't get a weight NUMBER, though! But "Black" and "White", well, that's a lot more black and white, isn't it? Less gray area.
As for your comments on revealing how we identify, you seem to disagree with the spirit behind rules 2.5 and 2.6. I don't know how MOST of the members at this site identify, not even the other moderators. Plenty of our members have acknowledged being biracial, mulatto, mixed, etc. However, that does not mean they ID as such. There's no point in expecting people to reveal how they self-identify and there's no point in wondering why they don't reveal that information.

Would it help if images could be posted only by registered users? Would such a rule prevent some of that inappropriate pics from getting posted?
Only registered users can post messages (or images) now. Even registered users cannot post anywhere but in this forum until they receive site posting privileges. The problem is that a spammer registers as a user, and then posts junk into this forum, which does not require posting privileges, knowing that he will be expelled and his post deleted as soon as a moderator sees it.
If we could make it so that you can only post images after posting 5 messages, say, it might cut back on the spam. But I cannot see any way to tweak the software to do this.
