Roy Innis Alarmed by Quote of Kanye West in December 2006 Issue of Essence Magazine
November 16 2006

Hip Hop and Rap Cultures Have Contributed to a Backward Slide for Black America

Roy Innis, National Chairman of CORE, is alarmed and concerned about a quote by Kanye West in the December 2006 issue of Essence Magazine. In the issue, West is quoted as saying, “If it wasn’t for race mixing there’d be no video girls. Me and most of our friends like mutts a lot. Yeah, in the hood they call ‘em mutts”.
Although Mr. Innis was struck by the reference to mixed-raced women as “mutts”, he was even more alarmed that Kanye’s statement might be an indication that Black America is slipping back into the self-contempt and self-hatred that he addressed in the l960’s and l970’s. This slide he attributes largely to rap and hip-hop cultures.

In a statement given on November 15, 2006. Mr. Innis states, “ I was one of the pioneers of the concept of Black is Beautiful. That we must be proud of our African ancestry. Unfortunately, the demon of self-depreciation has been the most difficult demon for Black Americans of all complexions to expell. Darker skinned Blacks like Kanye West have had an even harder time accepting Blackness in themselves and in others. I wonder how much we have gained psychologically, since the bad old days of the 60’s, in our appreciation of our Blackness”.

I don't know what to make of Kanye West. He probably doesn't realize how offensive his comment was. I wish somebody would call me a "mutt"...I would give them a piece of my mind! Laughing

If mixed-race people are 'mutts', then Kayne is a purebred IDIOT.

Kayne is your typically liar ,self -hating entertainer. He may say this, but boy oh boy, he sure likes his White women. He has been seen on some celeb gossip sites surrounded and loving it by some White women.

I wouldn't exactly say that those statements indicate "self-hate." Not at all actually.

what is so surprising? It still happens today, what you didn't know. so-called blacks that are mixed are called 'redbones'. They are preferred over darker ladies, still. That stuff hasn't gone anywhere. They openly choose video girls that are mixed, and most of the very popular black celebrities have European phenotypes. Kanye West is just willing to let it out. He probably knows himself that he is messed up. But it's the movie industry, music industry, and alot of stuff including the people. It's America's racist system. At least he is telling the truth, unlike some other people who would be too afraid. Everytime I hear about a standard for black women by non-black people, so-called that, they always talk about Biance, and how they dont like darker women.

mulatto means mule.

multiracial implies "mixed breed" which is also a "mutt".

Obama also referred to himself as a "mutt" while introducing a Cabinet Secretary.

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/entertainment/President-Elect_Barack_Obama__Picking_White_House_Pet__A_Major_Issue_.html?corder=reverse

Quote:
“We have two criteria that have to be reconciled. One, is that Malia is allergic so it has to be hypoallergenic. There are a number of breeds that are hypoallergenic,” he said. “On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but obviously a lot of shelter dogs are mutts — like me. So whether we’re going to be able to balance these two things I think is a pressing issue in the Obama household.”

Then again, it is one thing to refer to one's self as a mutt, it is another thing to call someone else that. Surprised

One might be humorous the other is rude. Calling people "out of their name" generally is rude, unless you are very close friend with them and they know it is a joke.

If someone called one of my kids a mutt they will be called a lot worse by me. Evil or Very Mad

THen again, I'm pretty sure if Kanye took an admixture test he would find out he was also a mutt. Laughing

Kanye uses this term in his music a lot, for example, in the song "Space Ship" off his first CD:

The clean version says he was "standin' next to a mutt" in the mall..." but the regular version says he was "smokin a blunt" in the mall.

Sad

I agree, DH.

It sounds like West has an issue with biracial/multiracial folks. And you're probably right...he might very well have a distant non-Black ancestor in his family tree.

I don't mind being called "multiracial" because in my view, it is not an offensive term. If the shoe fits...
Those who refer to themselves as "mulatto" simply do that out of wanting to remove the stigma around a historically hateful word.

"Mutt" is unacceptable. I consider myself to be a human being, not an animal.

I become annoyed and offended when people make references to my skin color or hair type with what I perceive to be racist connotations. That is when the claws come out.

The terms "mutt", "high yellow", and "redbone" deeply offend me.

I love being a "mixed breed", Laughing .

Sadly, there are many people like Kanye West that have issues and project their insecurities onto others with certain comments. I've noticed that he single-handedly injects race into all of his comments and most of his lyrics.

Like "mulatto," Redbone is also a derogatory term that has also been embraced by a self-identity group--a centuries-old ethnic community in western Louisiana.

That is true, Frank.

I learned that from reading an article at Interracial Voice about Redbones and Melungeons...it was pretty cool.

She has a beautiful body...but I don't find her face very attractive. Laughing

Her look-hair style fashion sense-is unusual, which makes her more appealing.

I can't say if West has an "issue" with bi/multi-racial folks. I don't really listen to his music. I've seen some of the women in his videos and his current arm candy, though. So I'll say he likes his women to be "mutts" very much.

I think she's got a cute face and body. I just hate the hair due. It is weird, but it's as if long hair has been ingrained in my head as a thing that women should have to be as attractive as possible. Super short hair knocks a woman down 2 whole points on a scale of ten.
