As promised Frank...

The enlarged image of Soledad, her mom and eldest daughter that you requested last year.

Hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas and it's good to see everyone here still active at this entertaining and educational site. Had a great Christmas vacation in Europe as always. Found out fantastic news there too. I'm pregnant with my second baby! My husband and I are so happy. That's why I've been missing in action here... Too exhausted and/or busy to post. I'm sure this will be the case for some time too. Well, at least I can pop in and read once in a while.

Anyway, it's good to be back!

Take care.

Felicia

I have a new way of dealing with "well-meaning" friends, strangers and coworkers who approach me with "You don't look Black to me", "What ARE you?" or (my personal favorite)"What's your nationality?"(this presupposes that I am so stupid that I think "nationality" means "ethnicity" rather than country of origin). I turn to them and immediately ask(with a straight face)"What's YOUR nationality?" or "What are YOU?" or I comment "You don't look White to me." This throws people off-balance completely and forces them to stop, THINK, feel uncomfortable and defensive----in other words, it forces them to have the same alienating experience multiethnic people have almost EVERY DAY in this country! Try it, and feel free. Cool

I've been asked questions like this most of my life. People are curious in some cases. Other times, there may be some nefarious reason for these questions. I've been questioned by whites, blacks, Hispanics, and Asians about my ethnicity. Have you ever had Hispanic people approach you and start speaking to you in Spanish? I have. I'm sometimes amused by these questions.

My daughter is in Middle school. Her science teacher is a white woman who is engaged to a black man. The fiance has come to the school a couple of times during the school day. My daughter told me that her teacher and her teacher's fiance kept staring at her. I'm assuming that they're probably fantasizing about what their own future child will look like. No harm, no foul.

Hmm. I wonder if she tells her kids that they are "light-skinned Blacks," the way her mother told her. Just a thought. You can carry that only so far before people think that you are nuts.

I guess she does

Hi everyone, need your input here. I have an ongoing discussion with my wife that was recently joined by CNN correspondent Soledad O’Brien. Obviously, I am a white man married to a black woman with two small interracial children. We are part of a CNN documentary scheduled to be aired in the spring of ’08 titled Race in America. In the interview conducted by Soledad, the question was asked as to how we would raise our children in relation to racial identity. I responded that I wanted them to see themselves as interracial – that is neither black nor white specifically. As they mature, should they want to identify themselves as either or both, that would be their prerogative. My wife differs in this as she takes the common argument that the world will see them – literally – as black, and consequently we should explain that and tell them they are African-American. Soledad takes that side and shared that her mother, who is black, told her and her siblings the same. She identifies herself as black, defends it adamantly, and raises her interracial children as black. What are your thoughts on this?

The irony is her mom would ahve been possibly described as a light skinned Black or a Mulata in Cuba, but she would definitely have been seen as White, just like her kids.

Best wishes to zsana.
---------------------------------

Soledad is not Black American. Her dad is White and her mom is Cuban.
She is not Black American.
Here lies the problem because people make a problem...Soledad has to be something and since she is famous,so she is considered Black here in our country.
Hispanic people do not consider themselves Black Americans . They let you know right off ,no matter if they are brown , they are NOT Black Americans. As for her kids, in my opinion, they are what they look and they look White and the will considered White by society.
I know many people who are Black, I guess ,but they look White, their parents look White and the lived in White worlds( school ,neighbors,) so they go as White.

But her mom (who sees herself as Black Cuban) raised her that way too...So Soledad would be 'Black American' as well depending on what
'Cuban' heritage was passed to her. Does Soledad speak spanish? And she is American(nationality) not Cuban(nationality) Her dad is Irish-Australian which is another dynamic in itself.

Not really, she wasn't always famous. Actually only in the last 10 years at the most. She was raised that way before the News.

I just believe , either wear a tee-shirt for indentification or just be. Society will take you for what you look like. Some people have problems because they have a hard time trying to"fit in."
I like Soledad, but umm, if she is so Black American and her children are ,according to her ,then why did marry a White man? Hmmmm... She should have gone only for Black guys . There is no way , marrying a White guy, could she have had Black kids. Yeah , I know her mom is a Black Cuban. That one little part would have not given her Black kids with a White husband. I personally think she has said this about having the kids be Black because she is famous. It would start a firestorm for her to publically say the other...the kids are going to go as White.
Black Amer., Jessa Jackson, Rev.Al wanting to meet with her, Tom Joyner- The Fly Jock and crew would go after her.

We're did she say her children were Black American?
Why does a persons racial identity get questioned if they marry someone of another race?
Blacks are sell outs
Whites are Ni&&er lovers etc etc
So you mean every black person who married non black are not really proud of being black?
Every white person who married a non white person are trying to escape their whiteness?

She has shifted her identity toward a 'multiracial' one. Remember the topic is:CNN's O'Brien embraces her own diversity.
I don't know what that fully means for her. But she seems to be accepting of her cuban heritage as well as American AA culture for herself. I don't know how the Irish part of her goes. I know a good number of 1/2Latin 1/2White poeple who don't identify with their 'whiteness' because Latino trumps that. Maybe that is the way it is with her mothers view of it as well.

Black Amer., Jessa Jackson, Rev.Al wanting to meet with her, Tom Joyner- The Fly Jock and crew would go after her.

I took that information from Salassin's post . See the post above with the mag cover. I like Soledad and I am not saying she is a sell-out.

No, that link was posted by Zsana and it's about another interracial couple that Soledad interviewed.

Here Latino means mestizo, Indian or Southern European white. People who "look black" are often not perceived as Latino by Latinos and non-Latinos; they are seen as "simply" black. Consequently, many simply identify as black, African American, even Caribbean (if they're of Caribbean ancestry).

The general perception seems to be that Latinos are either phenotypically white or mixed, but it's not as if Latinos who look black, regardless of admixture, are not accepted by other Latinos. I'm black, my father being African-American, and mother Afro-Colombian. Most people don't assume I'm Latino, but whenever other Latinos learn this they generally dispose of black American identification they made and recognize me solely as Latino. Of course this also depends on whether or not someone like me speaks Spanish.

Even in Latin American most of the people who look black, or rather the darker-skinned blacks, are identified as black(negro/negra). However here in the U.S. there's often some confusing when crossing cultures because people think of black and African-American as synonymous terms.
