I also recently bought Carleton Coon's Races of Europe (from 1939). I know the idea of races has been discredited and is no longer espoused by most anthropologists and geneticists, but that isn't why I bought the book. I find the descriptions and photographs of various European physical types interesting. I think using such a book for this reason (and not to promote the idea of the existence of race or racial superiority) can be interesting and helpful. Naturally, his conclusions (reading between the lines) that sub-Saharans were somehow barely human are ridiculous.
I also just had to see for myself why racialists found this book so indispensable. The copy was very cheap (and tattered), so I picked it up.
Any thoughts, besides the obvious? |

| May I ask what you paid for it? I have used the book several times. My essay on The Paleo-Etiology of Human Skin Tone, for example, uses the map of hair color from pages 270-271. But I have had to borrow it from the college library each time because used copies are way too expensive. I would love to buy a copy if I could find a cheap one. |

You can probably find it for a reasonable price at Alibris.com(http://www.alibris.com). I bought his book, The Races of Man, from that site for $19.00. |

Sorry, Frank...I didn't see this post. I paid $15.00 on Abebooks from a seller in Pennsylvania. It's not in the greatest condition, but it is complete and the binding isn't broken nor are the pages loose. What I find the most interesting, as I've said, are the descriptions of various physical types, as well as the maps on hair tone, eye tone, etc. |
