| Culture to be Wiggers for the most part ? For those of you who say no way, why is that ? Is it because you do not think most Puerto Ricans are White and hence such a label as Wigger is not accurate term for most Puerto Ricans who love hip hop music and break dancing. Ever wonder why Puerto Rican rappers are never referred to as Whiteboys trying to act Black. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that most Puerto Ricans in the U.S are not accepted with open arms into the socially White clubhouse, could be who knows. |

I can't believe you posted such a ridiculous question, but in a way I'm glad you did, because it reveals a great deal about your mindset. Wigger? I've honestly never heard that term used by anyone who is not overtly racist. |

Not at all. Originally Hip Hop consists of 3 elements: Rap music, dancing and graffiti. Puerto Ricans were integral in developing all three art forms from inception - it was never teh exclusive domain of "blacks"

Most NY Puerto Ricans that I have come across (I went to high school in the Bronx so that number was pretty high) did not consider themselves white at all.

Have you ever been to NYC or Philly or Bridgeport? Visit one of those cities and then ask that question again |

| anonymouse how come most NYC Puerto Ricans that you have come across do not consider themselves to be White ? Do you think it's because the WASP dominated American society/media has been telling them they are not White since they they were little. It's hard to adopt a White identity in a country where most people with names like John Brady and Kathy O'Reilly tell you are a racial minority. |

My observations were this: even if they could/would be accepted as whites they did not want to be. I don't know how true that statement is outside of the northeast though. |

If I'm not mistaken, Oprah Winfrey coined the term in 1992 on her show, where they were discussing white people who were into hip hop culture. |

Puerto Ricans have been a part of hip hop in the U.S. since WAY back in the day. They are not "biting" or "perpetrating". They can rightfully lay claim to the origins and everything that followed. |

i thought the term came from whites who sought to denigrate other whites who "acted black" in respect to music interests, dating preferences, clothing style and speech patterns. |

I thought that's where it came from too. Oprah just publicized it. It was in use some years before that Oprah episode |

Yes, that is my understanding as well. I can certainly recall hearing it in high school (which was nearly all "white") in the 1980s, and it was always used derogatorily. |
