Kingsport TN June 8-10, 2006

Sixth Union, the next Melungeon gathering, will be held June 8-10, at the Civic Auditorium in Kingsport, Tennessee. David Arnett, former U. S. General Consul to Turkey and a Melungeon descendent, will speak at this event.

We are looking forward to an outstanding lineup of presenters. Besides Mr. Arnett, we look forward to presentations from authors and researchers Evelyn Orr, DruAnna Overbay, Kathy Lyday-Lee, April Mullins Mela, Elizabeth Hirschmann, Wayne Winkler, A. D. Powell, Frank and Mary Sweet, Gwendolyn Higdon, Cheryl Holloway, Ted Klein, and others to be announced soon.

See the Melungeon Heritage Association website.

Sounds like fun. Maybe I'll make it next time.

That is a real shame. Mary Lee and I were looking forward to introducing you to members of the Carter family. Maybe next year.

Oh, believe me, I'm fit to be tied. I was promised that this elective surgery of my co-worker wouldn't interfere with my vacation. But there were complications, as I guess should be expected when any spinal surgery is undertaken. My co-worker is okay, but must remain in the hospital until the end of next week. Next year, come hell or high water, I'll be at the convention!

I was looking forward to meeting you and Mary Lee, and the Carter clan. I love folk music. At the small Peekskill gathering a few years ago, my friend and I sang "Miner's Life," "Goodnight Irene," and "When the Saints Go Marching In." Later, we ended up singing the Irish classic "Gypsy Rover," since we were the only ones who knew all seven verses.

SAVE the DATE!
*Bridges at Macalester College is proud to announce The 11th Annual
National Student Conference on the Mixed Race Experience: Looking into
the Mixed Race Mirror*

March 23-25, 2007
Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota

The theme for the conference, "Looking into the Mixed Race Mirror" will be
an examination of the effects of media portrayals of mixed-race people on
individuals. Programming will include panels focused on questioning the
idea of a monolithic mixed-race identity by incorporating the roles of
religious and sexual identity.

The conference will kick off Friday March 23rd with a registration reception
and a bone marrow donor drive. That night there will be a bone marrow drive
which will be facilitated with help from Mavin's MatchMaker project,
followed by an open mic night for conference attendees. Saturday and Sunday
will be chock-full of panels, paper readings, keynote speeches, and overall
fun times.

We're also having a call for proposals. If you'd be interested in
contributing to the conference -- in any medium -- please look at the site (
www.macalester. edu/bridges) for further details. We look forward to seeing
you in Minnesota this spring!

Also, registration is OPEN for...
*MULTIPLICITY: The Intersections of Racial Activism*
(West Coast Mixed Race Student Conference)
Hosted by the Multiracial Identified Community at Stanford (MICS)

April 14-15, 2007
Stanford Main Campus
http://mics.%20stanford.%20edu/index.%20html

Please visit the website for registration, lodging assistance, workshop
proposal form, and other conference information. All attendees are
encouraged to submit a workshop proposal!

Cost: the conference is free for everyone who registers online, but we will
ask for $5 per person at check-in to offset the cost of food (continental
breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided on April 14).
